Whale Watching in Mossel Bay: A Brief Guide
On South Africa’s Garden Route, Mossel Bay is a top spot for whale watching. From July to October (peak in September–October), Southern Right whales arrive from Antarctic waters to calve and nurse in the bay’s calm shallows. Humpbacks, Bryde’s whales, and the occasional orca also appear.
Boat tours from the harbour (typically 45–90 minutes) get you close to breaches, tail-slaps, and spy-hops, often with stops at Seal Island for Cape fur seals, plus possible dolphins and sharks. Land-based viewing works well too from The Point, St. Blaize Lighthouse, or Dana Bay.
