Early Human Traces at Mossel Bay’s Heritage Site
The Pinnacle Point Site Complex near Mossel Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds some of the earliest evidence of modern human behaviour in the world. Around 160,000 years ago, early Homo sapiens occupied its coastal caves, leaving behind tools, ochre, shellfish remains—and human remains older than 90,000 years in Cave PP13B.
These finds show our ancestors foraging the sea, using fire to shape stone, and possibly painting with pigment, offering a rare window into the origins of modern humanity along South Africa’s southern coast.
